The reason is most probably that you are trying to start VirtualBox
from your root account. This _would_ _probably_ work if you would
copy the .Xauthority file from the account which you are used to
login to the home directory of root BUT I strongly discourage you
from doing this!

Better start the GUI from a normal non-root account. If this
still does not work, check if you are able to start a normal
X application.

Kind regards,

Frank

Hmm, what do you mean by ''virtual discs get not attached''? You
would open the Virtual Media Manager and add some .vdis or .vmdks.
Later you can attach these images to a VM. Which of these steps
fails?

Kind regards,

Frank

Install the guest additions. And start reading the user manual.

Kind regards,
